PROCLAMATION CITY OF ST. PETERSBURG
Whereas, everyone on our planet is connected and affected by the oceans;
Whereas, the world's ocean covers 70% of our planet;
Whereas, it is critical to educate the public, and promote stewardship among children and adults alike;
Whereas, the ocean's rich diversity of life belongs to all citizens of the world; and
Whereas, the City of St. Petersburg is known for its concern and work for healthy oceans through a variety of institutions including the United States Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg, SRI, the International Ocean Institute USA, the USF College of Marine Science, National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, US Geological Survey, Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, the Pier Aquarium, and the Florida Institute of Oceanography; and
Whereas: the City of St. Petersburg is providing leadership for the International Coastal Cities Summit along with the International Ocean Institute and the St. Petersburg Environmental Research Center, and
NOW THEREFORE, I, RICK BAKER, Mayor of the City of St. Petersburg do hereby proclaim June 8th, 2007 as
World Ocean Day
in St. Petersburg, and ask everyone to join with me in recognizing how invaluable the ocean truly is and joining in the celebration of World Ocean Day on June 8th and 9th as part of the International Days Series at the Mahaffey Theater at the Progress Energy Center.
