Last night, in recognition of Human Rights Day, The United Nations Association of Tampa Bay, Global Healing and the Eckerd College for Spiritual Life and Campus Ministries sponsored a panel discussion on Human Rights.
On December 10th 1948, the UN adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Right. At Eckerd College 61 years later, a panel of scholars, clergy, activists and ambassadors of peace gathered to answer the question “Are Human Rights Universal”? Luz Nagle, a professor at Stetson University College of Law doesn’t think so.
Bill Felice, named the 2006 Florida Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation believes that the answer is self evident.
Panelist Ahmed Bedier, president of the Human rights Council of Tampa Bay, says the average US citizen doesn’t know the difference between human rights and civil rights.
David Randle, panel moderator and Co-Facilitator of the Global Healing Initiative, agrees and adds that the phrase “human rights” wasn’t part of our political lexicon until the mid-1970s.
Fred Morris, Director of the Faith Partners for the Americas in Panama attended the conference by live video stream. He was tortured by the Brazilian government, and says he has heard the ‘newspeak’ and thinks that Big Brother is in Stockholm.
